Biography // Andrew Nicolaou

Sydney-based photographer Andrew Nicolaou has always been fascinated with light – how it bounces off surfaces, how it passes through materials, and the differences in colour depending on the time of day. From a young age, he found himself composing pictures visually and storing them away in his subconscious, perhaps for future use.

‘The Botanical Series, evokes memories of my childhood. Growing up, my parents had an impressive collection of native and exotic flora, which caught my attention. I remember vividly the moment when my mother cut open a plastic pot containing an orchid and discovering its striking intricate network of roots. I wanted to understand more about plants and flowers and would often immerse myself in observing the flora in my family’s backyard. This series is a curation of florals in their respective season. The collection documents the different stages and colours of flowering, and attempts to expose some of the minute details of botanicals that are peculiar, and sometimes even magical.’

Andrew has been a featured artist at a number of art exhibitions.
